Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) For ETICS/EIFS

An Exterior Insulation Finishing System (EIFS), also known as EWI (Exterior Wall Insulation Systems) or External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS) is a type of cladding system that provides exterior walls with an insulated finished surface and waterproofing in an integrated composite material system. Put another way, an Exterior Insulation Finishing System / External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems can be defined as an ideal energy efficient thermal wrapping or facade insulation applied to the exterior surfaces of a building which is then finished with a long-life, decorative and protective wall coating that can be installed on any type of construction.

Adhesion Promotion: HPMC improves the adhesion between different layers of the ETICS/EIFS, ensuring that the insulation, base coat, reinforcement mesh, and finish coat bond effectively to one another and to the substrate. This is critical for the long-term durability and stability of the system.

Water Retention: One of the key properties of HPMC is its ability to retain water. In ETICS/EIFS applications, this helps to maintain moisture within the mortar or plaster during the curing process, which is essential for proper hydration and setting of the cementitious materials. This can prevent cracking and ensure a more uniform and stronger final product.

Viscosity Modification: HPMC acts as a thickening agent, increasing the viscosity of the mixtures used in ETICS/EIFS. Higher viscosity can improve the workability of the materials, making them easier to apply and reducing the likelihood of slumping or sagging, especially on vertical surfaces.

Thixotropy: HPMC imparts thixotropic properties to the materials, meaning they can be easily spread when agitated but then become more stable and less likely to flow once applied. This property is beneficial for maintaining the shape and position of the applied material before it sets.

Enhanced Durability: By improving the overall cohesion and integrity of the ETICS/EIFS components, HPMC contributes to the system's resistance against mechanical stress, weathering, and other environmental factors. This leads to enhanced durability and a longer service life of the building envelope.

Improved Flexibility: HPMC can add a degree of flexibility to the ETICS/EIFS, which helps the system accommodate minor movements in the building structure without cracking or delaminating.

The Role Of HPMC In EIFS/ETICS:

● Improved adhesion: The materials of the exterior walls are firmly held together by using this cellulose material.

● The adequate wetting ability for EPS board and substrate:Cellulose Ether HPMC/MHPC improves how effective the wetting of the board and substrate.

● Reduced air entrancement and water uptake: The air spaces within the external walls of buildings become resistant to the passage of air, which may weaken the structure. Water uptake is reduced as well, Cellulose Ether  HPMC/MHPC increases the water retention of the walls and this does not allow water uptake.

● Good consistency: This cellulose allows the walls to maintain a consistent finish look and appearance, and this adds beauty to the walls.

● Good anti-bleeding:Cellulose Ether HPMC/MHPC prevents the occurrence of bleeding within the exterior walls.

● Anti-crack and anti-shrinkage: The occurrence of wall cracks and shrinkages are prevented with the use of Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose.

● Good workability: It also offers good workability. The designated particle size distribution assures quick or lumps free dissolution. It is suitable for all conventional mineral and organic binders.
